FDA Approves First Pill for Postpartum Depression

The FDA approved zuranolone, a short-term oral medication that could help new parents who are struggling with depression after giving birth.

The drug is classified as an antidepressant and should be taken once daily over the course of fourteen days, according to Biogen, the company that developed Zurzuvae (zuranolone).

In trials, the treatment improved depression symptoms among new mothers as early as three days after they started the medication.

Zurzuvae (zuranolone), will be commercially available in the fourth quarter of this year, which could be as soon as October.
